With "Complex Silence", Timetheory and Phillip Wilkerson venture into the realms of enigmatic and abstract ambience. These two long-form tracks are the inaugural release in what promises to be an ongoing Series of releases, further expanding and exploring the depths of long-form space music composed entirely of extremely subtle changes, dissonant harmonies, stretched-out harmonics, abstract tone washes, and layers of mystical atmospheres, but never straying too far from beauty,...

We were fortunate enough to stumble across the music of Restive in the Open Source Audio section of the archive, and immediately became fascinated with the sounds and approach used by the artist. After some contact on Myspace, we were pleased to find the music of Restive amenable to being rereleased on Timetheory, and of his many sonic space journals, #14 was selected to be presented here. Little can be said about the music on "Captured Borbs..." that is not made amply clear by the...

Ulf Holbrook, aka Ulv, is one our compatriots from Norway, who by having relatives from very near to where Jon 7 lives, proves how small a world it is indeed. The tracks on "Lightning Sunbath" were made during a bus ride along the Norwegian coast, using sounds recorded from around Ulv on the bus which were manipulated and processed in real-time. These are great stretched and distorted sounds, loud and crunchy on one track, and considerable more sedate on the other. We here at TTHQ...

Spring Theory Mystahr's eighth album, and first for Timetheory, taking a small leap from his usual (www. intelligentmachinery. net) nest, "Spring Theory" was created almost overnight. The coming of spring and the lengthening of days was like a breath of inspiration and in a sense "Spring Theory" created itself when all the pieces fell into place as oft is the case in his Dutch scientist studio. With Complex Silence 2, Time Theory and Tange continue the Series with a truly beautiful set of long-form tracks that explore farther into the realms of enigmatic and abstract ambience. This contribution by Tange is a perfectly suited voyage into harmonic and dissonant mystery with a sublime mix of Tibetan bowls (Part 1) and Buddha Machine samples (Part 2). And, of course, both tracks feature the Tange trademark drones and washes that transport the listener into deeply satisfying layers of pure...

Somewhere in a space where an endless burnfire burns, in a never ending twilight, around a pole of every time but May, will be heard the circulating, pulsing loops and rhythms of "Carne Crescendo". Though ambient in places it may be, this is music for the flesh, a nine-part hymn to Pan (the big Horny One) brought to us by Fars. This recording waited ten years to be released properly, when you listen you can almost hear it struggling to get free and some amount of ferocious exaltation...

For Complex Silence 4, mysterybear (Dave Seidel) provides a decidedly abstract, yet sublime exploration of the Golden Ratio with two long-form tracks. He describes the creative process: "Both tracks use intervals and waveforms derived from the Golden Ratio. I usually compose in just intonation, which is based on rational numbers (whole number ratios). The golden ratio, by contrast, is an irrational number. Intervals based on irrational numbers are more complex and less consonant than pure...

TT label-head Jon 7 goes through occasional creative high cycles during one of which the tracks on "Science Fiction" were created. While searching for a unifying theme he turned to new inspirations that his schooling provided and went with the science fiction short stories he liked so well (soviet especially) and the new aesthetic experiments in op-art he took a strong liking to that week. The tracks themselves fit the space story theme well, electronic ambiences and dissonances that...

In this age of uncertainty in the US, we look to our neighbors in the north and find that they still know how to have a pretty good time! Synthia, a Canadian duo, sent Timetheory this album full of fun tracks and colorful sounds. The first description TTHQ gave Synthia about it was that it sounded like a mixture of Dr. Dre and Thompson Twins. As this description may unnerve some people, it's best to listen and give the music a chance to speak for itself. And indeed it's fun music. Labels, like...

"Drocht" is the first of the trilogy of deconstructions of Jon 7's "Time" album being released in the TT negative integer albums. Zieltogend's stock-in-trade is taking tracks, stripping them to their barest elements and recreating them in a stark and minimal fashion, what some might call "dark drift". This is a really excellent interpretation of "Time" in many ways because the original elements are unrecognizable, and because we find it fascinating how...

It goes without saying that we always look forward to releasing the work of Restive, whose work has always been fascinatingly original in approach and execution. His emergence from the (likely non-existent) South African experimental glitch-ambient scene is a marvel in itself, considering the high cost and strong regulation of internet service in SA. Jon 7, once again thinly veiled by his initials (JMMIII) was turning to Wikipedia and the periodic table for inspiration when he stumbled across an entry on crystal field theory, and the lightbulb switched on. (The following description was written by the author of this release.) Tijdgeest is the Dutch word for "in the spirit of time" but one can also translate it more literally to "spirit of time" (note the small but significant difference) or "ghost of time". We feel that this release in particular has the feel of a book rather than a movie (something a bit like "Cowyboy Feng's Space Bar and Grille"). This release...

At long last comes the release of this all-video compilation from Timetheory! We are highly excited about this. The videos were made by Jon 7 throughout 2006 for a project for FOEM. The videos were well-liked but were not used in the end. Rather than let this work go to waste, Jon 7 decided to round up various TT-associated artists to provide music for the videos, and now, 30 months after the concept sprang forth from the neural loins, it is now being presented to the public! The videos were...

Andreas has returned with another fine album for us; the question is, what sort of movie does it call to mind this time? The subject matter is much more personal this time, focusing on the sticky aspects of relationships. Unlike the average American teen romance movie, this album is much more thought-provoking and meaningful. After any intense relationship one feels the need to get their head checked. Through sounds and lyrics, this album shows how and why. It's the tale of a young mind trying...

The third installment of the "Theory" series from Simple Painter takes the theory concept farther out to explore the most popular conspiracy theories of our day. The tracks are given a feeling that suits the mystical and mysterious overtones of the track titles. The artwork blends several of these ideas into a sort of map connecting all things in a unique web of speculation. As with other Simple Painter albums the sound is a chunky sort of drone like a landscape with occasional...

"Salvation" is based on a rather simple concept: the starting off with a simple loop and continuously mutating it until it becomes unrecognizable. Standard stuff right? But there's more... the nd part of said mutation is then cut and looped, and mutated continuously. And so it goes through the length of this release. Instant is well-known for epic length releases, such as the 8.5 hour "Sourcery" on Jon7.net Microlabel. This recording is not quite that long, but it is long...

The third part of the Fars trilogy has arrived in the form of "Cka3at", a shorter collection of vignettes that serve as a bridge to the next part of the trilogy. Short as it is, a listener still gets a further defining taste of the universe according to Fars, a sort of proto-industrial world where machines are alive and pirates still run rampant across the stars. This is audio science fiction for the 21st century. Enjoy this recording now and stay tuned for part four of the Fars...

Once again, Andreas Niegl (Given Willingly) has presented us with a stunning effort in the form of "Weaken". We always like Andreas' albums, but this one is something special, in fact it only took two listens for Jon 7 to declare it Andreas' "best work to date". This album is a double, with two distinct sounds on each disc; the first disc is more synth driven with a lighter feel to it, and the second is more guitar driven with a stronger and somewhat darker feel to it. We...

"Alternate Universes" a fairly short and simple release, is a collection of experiemnts in the use of fractal images as source for bitmap to wave file conversion. There was something about these particular fractal images though, that generated some interesting subtleties in the resulting sound files, which gave them a sound one might associate with jets of gas streaming through space. It's simple space music, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Bath, a duo from Cleveland, Ohio are the creators of this release, which marks an unexpected but welcome deviation from the Timetheory norm (if there is such a thing). The music of Bath is more gothic, electronically industrial and lyrically oriented than any previous releases. "Endpoint" has a sound that is reminiscent of early 4ad and Nettwerk albums, or perhaps like the import CD in the discount bin we used to enjoy discovering in the late 80's. the glassy ambient wash of...

We caught up with Serocell recently, who had worked before with Jon7.net microlabel on "Diepe Oppervlaktes". When asked what he was working on, he sent us two short tracks, then this long-player here. "Liquid Acid" represents some of Serocell's best work, and while it's possible that this recording would sound good on literal liquid acid, think more of a gently corrosive material flowing through the ears. Pitched down voices and other sounds bubble and surface like a slowly...

Simple Painter releases seem to appeal to a certain segment of the Timetheory audience, so when the word went out that "Theory II" was coming up for remix, the interested remixers were right on target as far as their styles go, and these three extended remixes highlight some of the best of their respective styles. Mystified, already well-known and a good friend of Timetheory provided one remix. Norss, a new friend of Timetheory provided another darker droning piece, and Terra Engine...

Somewhere between clearinghouse and thank-you note lay the contents of "Time Bonus I". A few Timetheory artists and related conspirators took the time the remix the work of other Timetheory artists and related conspirators. It's worth noting incidentally that the remixes done of Justin Robert's tracks were done as a sort of secret fan gift Twyll and Jon 7 were conspiring to do for him. Thanks to Norss, Massimo Brazzini and Twyll for remixes as well as Justin Robert and Ruins Winter...

"Music for Spaceports"? Perhaps so! Our friend Tom from Germany sent us this suite of slow, ambient piano tracks, which arrived at perhaps the most nerve-racking period TTHQ had ever experienced. What a joy it was to listen to these tracks and simply..slow..down... When life seems too much and peace seems impossible to find, how often it is that we are simply going too fast, driving ourselves too hard, and never letting ourselves take even the breath we need to live. Those are the...

In the tradition of many memorable collections of ambient works, Time Theory label head Jon 7 has put together this compilation of previously unreleased material culled from several different marathon recording sessions. The subjectivity of their selection stems from their inclusion by personal preference as opposed to strict adherence to any typical Jon 7 sound, although we challenge your ears to tell the difference.
